transpire to get you home

We're heeeeeere! Finally after months and months (seven of them!) and days and weeks and hours, we're here, and all our stuff is here, and the dogs and the cats are here, and we even have internet! Hurray!

Getting here was long and exhausting and worrisome. There was the Readying The House To Put On The Market Ordeal, followed by the House-hunting/finding/losing Starting Over Ordeal, in conjunction with the Keeping the House Ready to Show Even Though We Have 6 Dogs and 4 Cats Ordeal, and then the We Have An Offer Now We Have To Get Through the Inspections and Closing Ordeal, and finally concluding with the Let's Move in February with 6 inches of Snow on the Ground Ordeal - which is why we had the sideshow of Our Moving Truck Is In The Ditch At The Bottom Of The Drive And All Our Stuff Is Tipped Over Inside The Pods Ordeal*, and an encore of Holy Shit It's Snowing Again!

But hey - we're here!

While we unloaded the last bit of our worldly goods from the truck late on Friday evening, I happened to glance up at the dark night sky and - gasp - there was the Milky Way, gazing back at me. How long since I'd seen a skyful of stars? Until last Friday, it had been years.

Yesterday our old house got one final scouring, and then we turned it over to the new owners, who said in an email that they're "oh so sublimely excited." Today we found a note from the previous owners of this (our new) house, telling us about her 35 years here, and how she loved this place, and wishing us well and happy for many years to come.

Tonight it's still snowing. The dogs running in the yard look like they're churning through whipped cream. The roads - and our drive - are covered deep. My car is parked halfway down the hill because I was afraid to risk getting it to the top.  There's a tower of boxes in the front hall, and a driveway full of storage pods to unpack.  But we're happy...we're home!

a world ready for greening

This is (as of 4pm today!) our new house:

Below is the master  Mistress' bedroom in said house. Thanks to the crappy photo the Realtor took, you can't tell much about the color, but the important things to note are these: a) It's green, and b) We're not changing it. We've used up all our painting patience on the house we just sold (and are still living in, renting from the new owners for 10 more days until we can take possession of the new place...) and so have decided to live with what's there now. Fortunately, it's colors we like - yellow in the main living areas downstairs, and this green in our bedroom and bath (I think!) Also, this stuff? Not ours:

So, I'm looking at green bedrooms online, and not finding myself terrifically inspired. From what I'm seeing here, I could conclude that my only choices are either white bedding (the clear front-runner), or green and...more green.

Neither are going to work for me.

These are all lovely, and some are really great, but I'm just not feeling it. Do any of you have inspiring images of green bedrooms to share? I need help!

A Bursting of Green by Raymond A. Foss
Long dormant carpet of grey, of brown
parched and pending
poised for an awakening
showers and warming
a bursting of green
in the yard, the trees, my world
a different day,
from a single spring shower
on a world ready
for greening

some fog is often useful

Early in the week our house-hunting adventure led us into the hills. The tops of the knobs were swathed in ghostly gray. The next day, the fog rolled down the hill and filled the valley. It's still here.

make a second better

What a difference a day makes!

This has been such a roller-coaster, with giddying heights, stomach-churning drops, and twists and turns galore. Frankly it's been hell, but now - I think - the end may actually be in sight. Almost. Maybe?

So, River House will not be ours. Soon our house won't be ours, either, it will belong to the new family. But (we hope!)  this house will be:

all photos mine (and the Realtor's)

The house was built in 1965,  has had one owner,  and lots of updates. It's on 7 acres, mostly wooded, with a creek. 3 bedrooms (a craft room/office, AND a proper guest room!!), 2 baths, 2 fireplaces, one with a wood stove insert. Beautiful hardwood floors,  tile in the kitchen. It's almost 1000 sq ft larger than River House, and nearly 1/2 hour closer to the city we're moving away from, but where we'll still work, play, shop, and have friends and family.

That kitchen? HUGE!
That fireplace? Needs a makeover!
This furniture and decor? Not ours, thank God! (Well, there are a few pieces I'd say yes to...)

And River House, that quiet, solid, still house waiting on the hill, looking over the Blue River? No matter how we loved it - and love it now - it was not meant to be ours. So we've moved on. And truthfully? I think we'll be happier here:

This bears repeating:

"There will be little rubs and disappointments everywhere, and we are all apt to expect too much;
 but then, if one scheme of happiness fails, human nature turns to another;
if the first calculation is wrong, we make a second better:
we find comfort somewhere." ~ Jane Austen

Amen, Jane. Amen.
