DIY Fun

DIY is fun, satisfying, easy on the wallet, and in many instances, good for the planet. Of course there are times when it just sucks to have to do-it-yourself, but we're not talking about that kind of DIY. We're talking about the fun stuff...

Here's a roundup of some recent favorites:

• Even a vehemently anti-sewing DIYer like me can handle this project from The Angry Chicken that turns a long-sleeved tee into a lightweight cardigan in less than 5 minutes.

• Make your own "Drumstick"-style frozen ice cream treats, in all your favorite flavor combos, with these instructions from Instructables. Yummo!

• Create a super funk-a-licious bracelet from leftovers bits and bobs with Crafy Chica's fun and easy tutorial. And yes, I will definitely be making one of these - look at it, how could I not?!

• Save some cash while practicing the first "R" in the "Reduce/Reuse/Recycle" holy trinity by making your own laundry soap. It's super easy, dirt (?) cheap, and oh-so-satisfying; I've been making and using this for about 6 months now, and wouldn't even consider going back to store-bought detergent. My clothes are as clean as they were when I used ready-made, and they smell great. **NOTE: I did make a few changes to the recipe I found here, @ The Simple Dollar. I don't have - and so, don't use - washing soda. I have baking soda, so use it instead, and I did have a bottle of biological washing liquid (Dreft brand) when I started making my own, so I add 1 cup of that to each bucketful of homemade. When it's gone I probably won't buy any more.** Basically you just need a bar of soap, a cup of borax and/or baking soda (optional), some hot water, and a bucket (I use an empty kitty litter bucket) and you're good to go. Google around for more recipes and you'll see that it's a pretty relaxed process.
