gray falls from the air

Perfectly captured cold, by Maggie from fun to print at Etsy:

Lines For Winter
by Mark Strand

Tell yourself
as it gets cold and gray falls from the air
that you will go on
walking, hearing
the same tune no matter where
you find yourself --
inside the dome of dark
or under the cracking white
of the moon's gaze in a valley of snow.
Tonight as it gets cold
tell yourself
what you know which is nothing
but the tune your bones play
as you keep going. And you will be able
for once to lie down under the small fire
of winter stars.
And if it happens that you cannot
go on or turn back and you find yourself
where you will be at the end,
tell yourself
in that final flowing of cold through your limbs
that you love what you are.

forge it into steel

It's finally gotten cold here - and by cold I mean freeeeeeezing, even to me, who runs hotter than anyone I know. The wind is bitter, and cutting, and calls for a scarf. The ones I have aren't nearly so lovely as these, by Patricia of ArtLab on Etsy.

I know

"Time for the weather report: It's cold out folks. Bonecrushing cold. The kind of cold which will wrench the spirit out of a young man, or forge it into steel."  ~ Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, Northern Exposure, Lost and Found, 1992

words spoken in winter

it's cold outside. so cold that i want stand on the back step and whisper a charm to the north wind, and watch my utterances crystallize in tiny alabaster puffs that float away in the sharp night air. the pale moonlight, pouring white down into the black, makes it colder still.

In a certain faraway land the cold is so intense that words freeze as soon as they are uttered, and after some time then thaw and become audible, so that words spoken in winter go unheard until the next summer.  ~Plutarch, Moralia
