don't you love a cushioned seat

My living room is sorely lacking in the throw cushion department. Actually, it's not that I don't have cushions, it's just that I'm not thrilled with the ones I do have. At least I'm not thrilled with them in my living room.

So I'm on the hunt.

How do you like your throw pillows? Matching pairs, carefully coordinated, lined up just so? One-of-a-kinds, tossed casually here and there? Perhaps you're a purist, preferring your soft furnishings naked?

Show me your favorite looks, will you, thank you, please?

Don't you love a cushioned seat in a corner, by the fireside, with your slippers on your feet?

the rust of the whole week

Monday, again.

No, wait - it's not Monday again...this is an entirely different Monday. Days don't repeat themselves, time doesn't go in a circle. Every day is new, and only comes once. That little insight is worth remembering.

I spent the weekend pretty much exactly as planned. Saturday was all about cleaning and errands, and then Sunday was all about doing the fun stuff. I'm easily amused, so cleaning out my makeup drawer and giving myself a mani/pedi ranked right up there on the highlights of the day.

I also spent a sizeable portion of the day flipping through some of my decorating books. These images are all from BH&G's  New Cottage Style:

They're not all the same house, but they could be. And I could live there.

Sunday clears away the rust of the whole week.

supremely satisfied at the end

Don't you LOVE it when a plan actually works out like you'd intended? Thank you Jenny, and Anna, for the inspiration, and Jenn for all the help with the execution.

Ahhhhhh...

a dish and a spoon on the table danced...

Plate walls: perennial favorites that resurface as a trend every so often. I've been doing plates on the wall for - well, forever.

Like mirrors and shelves, plate walls seem to always be a good design choice - dependably do-able, they pack a big punch, and are something I never tire of. When I'm ready for a change on the wall, the plates can go back in the cupboard.

Slowly but surely I'm making Moss Hill look and feel like home. I'm certain a plate wall (or two!) is in the very near future. Inspiration is all over blogland (this is one of those trendy times) and I love the look. Mine will be (mostly) Blue Willow; I've been collecting this pattern since I was 14, and have amassed dozens of pieces.

The top image is my favorite:

At the Sign of the Prancing Pony

There is an inn, a merry old inn
beneath an old grey hill,
And there they brew a beer so brown
That the Man in the Moon himself came down
one night to drink his fill.

The ostler has a tipsy cat
that plays a five-stringed fiddle;
And up and down he runs his bow,
Now squeaking high, now purring low,
now sawing in the middle.

The landlord keeps a little dog
that is mighty fond of jokes;
When there's good cheer among the guests,
He cocks an ear at all the jests
and laughs until he chokes.

They also keep a hornéd cow
as proud as any queen;
But music turns her head like ale,
And makes her wave her tufted tail
and dance upon the green.

And O! the rows of silver dishes
and the store of silver spoons!
For Sunday there's a special pair,
And these they polish up with care
on Saturday afternoons.

The Man in the Moon was drinking deep,
and the cat began to wail;
A dish and a spoon on the table danced,
The cow in the garden madly pranced,
and the little dog chased his tail.

The Man in the Moon took another mug,
and rolled beneath his chair;
And there he dozed and dreamed of ale,
Till in the sky the stars were pale,
and dawn was in the air.

Then the ostler said to his tipsy cat:
"The white horses of the Moon,
They neigh and champ their silver bits;
But their master's been and drowned his wits,
and the Sun'll be rising soon!"

So the cat on his fiddle played hey-diddle-diddle,
a jig that would wake the dead:
He squeaked and sawed and quickened the tune,
While the landlord shook the Man in the Moon:
"It's after three!" he said.

They rolled the Man slowly up the hill
and bundled him into the Moon,
While his horses galloped up in rear,
And the cow came capering like a deer,
and a dish ran up with the spoon.

Now quicker the fiddle went deedle-dum-diddle;
the dog began to roar,
The cow and the horses stood on their heads;
The guests all bounded from their beds
and danced upon the floor.

With a ping and a pang the fiddle-strings broke!
the cow jumped over the Moon,
And the little dog laughed to see such fun,
And the Saturday dish went off at a run
with the silver Sunday spoon.

The round Moon rolled behind the hill,
as the Sun raised up her head.
She hardly believed her fiery eyes;
For though it was day, to her suprise
they all went back to bed.

and they are beautiful

I have always loved birds, real and otherwise...

I have some vivid  and happy memories of birds from my childhood, specifically, a bird mobile that hung above my crib, and the fact that my father's nickname for me was "Jaybird."

Without really trying to I've ended up with a small collection of bird-themed things - little figurines, a print or two, some birdhouses.

When J and I did The Big Thrift last weekend I remarked that, if I'd wanted to, I could have completed a collection of framed bird prints in one day - they were everywhere. Thinking about it a few days later I realized it's not a bad idea.

I don't ask for the meaning of the song of a bird
 or the rising of the sun on a misty morning.
 There they are, and they are beautiful.  ~ Pete Hamill
