words spoken in winter

it's cold outside. so cold that i want stand on the back step and whisper a charm to the north wind, and watch my utterances crystallize in tiny alabaster puffs that float away in the sharp night air. the pale moonlight, pouring white down into the black, makes it colder still.

In a certain faraway land the cold is so intense that words freeze as soon as they are uttered, and after some time then thaw and become audible, so that words spoken in winter go unheard until the next summer.  ~Plutarch, Moralia
