a secular sanctuary

I'm travelling for work again this week, renting a car, spending 2 days driving and visiting shelters.

Rental cars are great - all clean, no dog hair or crumpled tissues or coffee spills - but the flip side of that is that they're not as driver-friendly as your own car. All that stuff that's in your glove box/console/floorboard just isn't there. I don't know about you, but I need a lot of that stuff while I'm driving...

I have a solution. It's a rental car survival kit:

Start with a divided plastic caddy. You probably already have one. I do - it's the red one, below.

Then add the things you'll need, things that are usually in your console, things you'll want to reach easily as you drive. Things like your electronics:

(Don't forget your chargers and adapters!)

Snacks, drinks:

Comfort items:

Plus a plastic bag to corral trash, and anything else you might need, like:
  • change for tolls
  • hair ties
  • your lucky bobblehead or travel saint

Plop the caddy on the front seat next to you (if you're traveling alone) so you can reach it easily and without looking. Hook the seat belt around it of you're known for sudden stops. Ahem. If you have a road-tripping buddy, he or she can be your travel bitch and hand you whatever you need, whenever you need it. That's the rule for non-drivers. (And if you trade off driving, you'll be the travel bitch when it's your turn. No bitching.)

The car has become a secular sanctuary for the individual,
his shrine to the self, his mobile Walden Pond.

into the world within

I'm on the road for work, traveling back to my home state, sleeping in my home town, spending time with the family and friends of my beginning,

I've been given my sister's RV to call my own while I'm here, just a few feet from the house, yet a world unto itself. I'm loving it down in my gypsy soul.

I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless,
as it extends into the world around us,
it goes an equal distance into the world within.

in a strange town

Kansas City, MO

I'm traveling for work, visiting shelters, forging bonds, offering support. Doing what I love, helping shelters help animals.

It's cold and rainy, and the wind is fierce. I don't mind; I'm in for the night, with room service coffee and bags packed for tomorrow's return home. I enjoy staying in hotels, with their magical self-making beds, self-tidying rooms, and dog-free sheets. Plus? It's a steady 60 degrees in my little temporary world, much too cold for wifey, but perfect for me. Still, it's not home...

Cocooned as I am in this one-size-fits-all space, these images - full of the clutter and clatter of home - are especially appealing.

To awaken quite alone in a strange town
is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world.

the original harmony

Have you been watching this? It's a crazy trainwreck slice of life reality show, part funny, part sweet, part sad, and 100% entertaining.

I wouldn't want to be a Gypsy or Traveller, but watching the show has reminded me that I want a Gypsy caravan. I've never outgrown my childish love of a "playhouse," and could probably create an entire village of tiny houses of one sort or another right here on Moss Hill.

Look at these confections...can you blame me?!

Wandering re-establishes the original harmony
which once existed between man and the universe.
