life is what happens

As a teenager my dream was to live in a log cabin in the mountains. At 15, I was reading books like How to Build Your Home in the Woods, by Bradford and Vera Angier, and the Foxfire series. I wanted trees, and wind, and water. I wanted to stand, cozy and snug, and watch the snow fall in the moonlight outside my window. Somehow that dream got packed away and very nearly forgotten (you were so right, Mr. Lennon, when you said, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans.")...

Fast-forward a few dozen years, and here I am, pining for this log home on 8 acres, with river frontage (trees, wind, and water included):

But as much as I want a log cabin, I don't want typical log cabin decor. I'd rather see deer in my yard than on my wall, and I doubt I'd ever intentionally own a blanket with grizzly bears on it. Just because I want a cabin doesn't mean I have to have a patchwork quilt on my bed, and twig furniture throughout.

Don't get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things; I own and love quite a few patchwork quilts, and actually like twig furniture a lot. But this is just NOT MY STYLE:

Do you have dreams you've lost, then found? What are you doing about it?

"The simplest questions are the most profound. Where were you born? Where is your home? Where are you going? What are you doing? Think about these once in a while and watch your answers change." -Richard Bach

Your blog often elicits an emotional response from me. Often your topics are exactly what I am pondering. You have done it again with this posting.

Six years ago, a professional development speaker said something like, "If every breath you take and every step you make is not getting you where you want, then you need to reexamine you dreams/goals/objectives. My raging, tormenting question is "What do I really want?"

Got any good ideas?

Marsha,

Come July, we will make copious lists and plans over pots of scalding tea late at night in Scottish hostel kitchens. We will find the answer, together. Or, at least have a wonderful time trying!

xox,
Susan
