we twa hae run about the braes

LISTEN:

Auld Lang Syne
Robert Burns

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
and auld lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
for auld lang syne,
we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
and surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu’d the gowans fine ;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary foot,
sin auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We twa hae paidl’d i' the burn,
frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid ha roar’d
sin auld lang syne.

CHORUS
And there’s a hand, my trusty fiere!
and gie's a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll tak a right gude-willy waught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

Auld Lang Syne
English Translation

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and old lang syne?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup!
and surely I’ll buy mine!
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a wearyfoot,
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend!
And give us a hand o’ thine!
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

*The song's Scots title may be translated into English literally as "old long since", or more idiomatically, "long long ago"[3] or "days gone by". The phrase "Auld Lang Syne" is also used in similar poems by Robert Ayton (1570–1638), Allan Ramsay (1686–1757), and James Watson (1711) as well as older folk songs predating Burns.[4] Matthew Fitt uses the phrase "In the days of auld lang syne" as the equivalent of "Once upon a time..." in his retelling of fairy tales in the Scots language. -from wikipedia

a vast perhaps

A few days ago, a posse of inspectors swarmed through the house, poking, prodding, peering, turning back, tipping over, climbing up, reaching under... They didn't find much more than a few trifling deficiencies, which we will correct so that we can move on to the next round of nail biting.

Today we did the same thing at River House. The inspector liked it so much he said he would live there himself.  Shawlene saw a small herd of deer bounding through the woods just past the edge of the lawn.

Sorry, Mister; this is our piece of heaven.

fast away the old year passes

The very minute Christmas is over it feels like it's been over forever. The door is swinging closed on the old year and opening on the new.

I'm not one to make resolutions, per se, but January 1 is a nice clear delineation between what was and what will be. It's a good time to start things, or finish them. At the very least it's a good time to take stock, and make plans.

In the coming year -

I will move - and be moved - more often.

I will eat more healthy food, real food.

I will grow out my hair long enough to twist up into a messy knot. I will enjoy said knot, and not feel the need to tuck in all the loose ends. This is a metaphor for other areas of my life as well.

I will have more fun with my clothes.

I will sit by the fire, warming my toes, and read more.

I will spend more time in the garden, and in the woods.

I will lie on my back and watch the clouds drift by overhead.

I will embrace the light.

It's going to be a very good year! What are you going to do with it?

fast away the old year passes,
fa la la la la, la la la la
hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
fa la la la la, la la la la
