seams of walls and floors

We've finally gotten to the fun stuff: hanging pictures, fluffing pillows, having friends and family out for Sunday brunch -

All is well in our corner of Eden.

My coffee and I stopped by the wickedly funny My Favorite and My Best this morning and sat, wide-eyed and smiling, as I watched this treasure Jenny had found in her inbox. It's so very perfect I had to share, because I know you'll love it, too. Watch:

See? I told you!

Houses, houses
Seams of walls and floors
Windows to hallways
Closed and open doors...

chief nourisher in life's feast

The guest room in our new house will be the "peedie*" room, no larger than the room of the same distinction in Sylvia Brown's Hostel in Orkney, Scotland. In fact, as soon as I pictured the twin beds in this room, my mind's eye overlaid that scene with one of the room my sister and I shared there in Stromness last summer.

photo mine: Stromness, Orkney, Scotland

The guest room here is, so far, just two twin beds with bare mattresses. Bed-making and picture-hanging are about all there is left to do - the room's too small for much else, but big enough for sleeping, which is enough, after all.

Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleave of care
The death of each day's life, sore labour's bath
Balm of hurt minds, great nature's second course,
Chief nourisher in life's feast.
~William Shakespeare,
Macbeth

*Peedie(adjective): an Orcadian (Orkney, Scotland) English word, meaning ‘little’

the great affair is to move

6th Street, Old Louisville

Until we moved, our six dogs had spent their entire lives living in a house with a tiny but well-fenced yard. Now they have 7 lovely acres to enjoy - woods and streams, hills, trails. We're up and back 1/4 mile from the road, with a curved drive that keeps the road out of sight and at a safe distance.

You might think that would be enough.

It's not. The little shits have made a game of running right down the drive straight for the road. We've had to go and collect several of them, and now they're all going out on leashes - something we didn't even have to do on when we lived downtown in the city.

We're going to have to install a fence. We can't fence the whole 7 acres, and wouldn't want to anyway. We don't want to fence the entire acre or so that's lawn, either. What we want is a portion of the lawn - surrounding the house, or maybe just part of it - to be fenced and gated.

I'm looking at these for inspiration - the last 3 are of the same fence, and looks the simplest, and least expensive to accomplish. One major difference: all our plantings will be on the outside of the fence.

in a room that is gray

Blue sky, gray trees, pale green buds, white snow -
Spring is coming:

Although you sit in a room that is gray,
Except for the silver
Of the straw-paper,
And pick
At your pale white gown;
Or lift one of the green beads
Of your necklace,
To let it fall;
Or gaze at your green fan
Printed with the red branches of a red willow;
Or, with one finger,
Move the leaf in the bowl--
The leaf that has fallen from the branches of the forsythia
Beside you...
What is all this?
I know how furiously your heart is beating.

hopefully in case

Last night a bunny hopped across the porch, pausing for a moment in the patch of light outside the window. The dogs are convinced he lives under the porch. I suspect they're right.

These bunnies and the little red-capped girl, by Brooklyn-based artist Naoko Stoop, make me smile and smile. They remind me a bit of the illustrations from The Little Prince, almost deceptively simple and innocent.

And all Rabbit's friends-and-relations spread themselves about on the grass, and waited hopefully in case anybody spoke to them, or dropped anything, or asked them the time.

tell all the stars

When the previous homeowners moved out of our house they took the vanity mirrors from both bathrooms with them. I have quite a few mirrors, and may be able to choose from my collection for one or both bathrooms.

If none of mine work I'll have to shop. Oh, pity...

and through the open window
i think the singing went outside
and floated up to tell
all the stars not to hide
cuz by the time church let out
the sky was much clearer
and the moon was so beautiful,
that the ocean held up a mirror
